Oh yes, 'angst' is a German word, used in many languages (English, Dutch) and I' m a little ashamed that this word has been spread all over the word, I'm going to ask me: why? Surely Sigmund Freud has been influenced by German culture and has written in German. Are we German full of so many kind of 'angst'? We have evoced much 'angst' in our horrible history, but nowadays too, everlasting 'angst'? I never, never hope that may be true!
Your expressive pic is very impressive, I recognize a face (but not with a crying open mouth as I would have expected), a person whose head/mind has been captured by many thoughts and emotions going to explode- as the colours seem to express! For me is red a colour of 'angst'

terry: one needn’t be ashamed for the proliferation of a negative term that may have originated in ones country, Philine. in this case, i believe the baggage the term carries is common across cultures. i agree that red would be the obvious colour with which to associate the feeling but i went a little beyond the hue to what i consider to be the formative stage. the red manifests itself later. i think angst does not appear suddenly. it is the resultant effect of many experiences. the person in the pic is a child and i believe she hasn’t reached the stage of the silent scream. but her experiences are helping her get there. i used calm colours from the cool side of the spectrum to symbolize the seemingly harmless sources from whence angst springs and ones oblivious reciprocation of those experiences only reinforces them. in plain terms - the world gives us much more than we ask from it. and not all of it is beautiful. our experiences are not just those that we are able to identify. limitations in language and intelligence bar us from the awareness of what we have let in. there is a reason why angst is distinguished from anguish or sorrow. we needed to evolve enough to understand this. just as the child in the pic will never know that the blue is really red.
